The summer software update is landing — what owners are noticing
Over-the-air updates have started reaching members' cars again this month. Here is what people in the community are reporting — and the usual reminder that rollouts arrive in their own time.

August is update season in the group chat. Every year around now the summer software releases start reaching cars, and every year the same thing happens: two people with what looks like the same car, bought in the same month, get the update three weeks apart and cannot work out why.
So, first the honest part. What follows is a community write-up, not a release note. Manufacturers stage their rollouts by region, by model year and sometimes by nothing anybody outside the company can see, and features get added, held back or changed while a rollout is still going. If you want to know what your car actually received, the release notes on the car's own screen are the only source that is right for your car.
With that said, the themes members are reporting this month are familiar and welcome. Trip planning keeps getting quietly better across brands — Tesla owners in the community have been comparing notes on routing that seems more willing to send you to a slightly slower charger if it saves you a detour, which is exactly the trade-off most of us would make by hand anyway. Several members with other makes have described similar improvements arriving on their cars, which suggests the whole industry is chasing the same problem rather than any one company having a moment.
The second theme is the energy screen. More cars are now showing where the kilowatt-hours went — heating, driving, sitting on a cold morning — instead of leaving you to guess. It is a small thing that changes how people drive, because a number you can see is a number you start managing.
The third is the least glamorous and probably the most useful: interface tidying. Fewer taps to the things you use every day, and a few settings that no longer hide three menus deep. Nobody makes a video about that. Everybody notices it on the school run.
A word on expectations, because it comes up every year. An over-the-air update is a lovely thing to receive and a terrible thing to wait for. If yours has not arrived, nothing is wrong with your car. Leave it on Wi-Fi overnight, get on with your week, and it will turn up.
